Follow these tips to quickly get your claim completed and get you back on the road as soon as possible:
- If possible, move your car out of traffic to a safe place.
- Call the police to see if they need to come out to the accident. Definitely call the police if the other party involved is trying to leave the scene, refuses to give any information or is making any sort of threat.
- Get the names, driver's license numbers and contact information for everyone involved in the accident, as well as, their insurance policy number and information. This includes drivers, passengers and if possible witnesses.
- If possible take pictures of the accident: the surrounding area, the damage to both cars... the more the better.
- Be sure to get the license plate numbers, VIN (Vehicle Identification Numbers) and year, make and model of all cars involved.
If you have a paper and pen handy, tyr to write a description of everything that just happened, including speeds traveling, direction of vehicles, locations of streets, if anyone braked or useed their horn, weather and traffic conditions, etc.
- Do not admit fault, however, be as cooperative as possible with others involved in the accident and/or the police.
- Report the claim to your insurance company as soon as possible. Even if it was not your fault or the other party wants to handle things "without involving the insurance companies". Many times the other party will change their mind about who they think is at fault, suddenly realize there neck or back hurts (and try to sue you) or simply refuse to pay the repair bills because they think it is too expensive. Having your insurance company involved from the start means they are able to protect your interests and handle your claim quickly and with as little headache as possible. Remember, your insurance rates only increase when you are at fault for an accident.
